Lets face it. Most of us mums have been here – the kid has FINALLY gone down for a nap, with only 30 minutes of protesting this time. You’ve put the washing on, and have sat down to enjoy that cuppa before miss sunshine wakes, when the doorbell goes.
Is it the courier with the much anticipated parcel for you, or is it the nosy neighbour down the street wanting a chat and who seems to sense that you’re behind the door checking who it is?
Unfortunately for me, my kids don’t nap these days, so it’s usually me going to answer the door with a whinging tag along toddler who likes to say hello to EVERYONE 😛 Which, besides the obvious annoying factor, can be kinda dangerous as we live on a kinda main road.
So when I got asked if I’d like to review the Ring Video Doorbell, I definitely agreed!
The Ring Video Doorbell is an internet (via wifi) enabled doorbell. This allows you to get alerts to your smartphone, tablet or pc when anyone rings the doorbell or triggers the built in motion sensors. Then using the Ring app (Android, IOS, Windows 10) you can hear, see, and even speak to your visitor!
It comes straight out of the box with a rechargeable battery, which Ring reckon will last approx 12 months on one charge. Of course, this would be dependant on which motion sensors you setup (if any), how often it would be triggered, and, in my case, how much you play with it when setting it up 😜 You are also able to set it up connected to an existing powered doorbell wiring, which will save you from charging the unit. I haven’t done this as yet, but will update this post as soon as we have 😃
It also comes with all the usual tools to install your Ring Video doorbell – even a drill bit and the cutest little level! 😜 If you’re drilling into brick however, you may need to use a power drill.
Out of the box you also get a 30 day trial to their Ring Cloud service, which allows you to record and access all your videos from anywhere for up to 6 months. This service runs in at $45NZD per year (or $4.50NZD a month) per camera at the time of writing this article. Don’t worry, if you choose not to sign up to this service, the Ring Video Doorbell will still allow you to use it in realtime.
I found it super easy to setup but if you get stuck there are plenty of videos on their website to help you get on your way 😃
As the Ring Video doorbell does stream live video and audio to the cloud server, and then onto your device, you will need an internet connection that is capable of doing this. To then get alerts & view this video on your device you will need an internet connection on your device. Obviously, the doorbell is best installed near your wifi source as anything that would usually cause wifi interference (walls, metal gates etc) will interfere with connection/video quality. The image quality I found acceptable & I didn’t have any issues on my device side (usually on a 4g signal).
